Make Stephen Fleming the coach: Warne
Sydney, Shane Warne has revealed his plan to put Australian cricket back on track. In Part 1 of a detailed document released on his website, the legendary spin bowler makes a number of recommendations, among which is the suggestion to make the former New Zealand captain, Stephen Fleming as the coach of the Australian national cricket team, raising quite a few eyebrows across the cricketing fraternity back home because of the Trans-Tasman rivalry.
"I believe he brings a lot to the table, a calmness, an intelligent understanding of the game and a very good cricket brain. He's a good communicator too as well as a good leader of men," writes Warne. He further stated that Fleming was the best opposition captain he played against.
Warne has also put forward the name of former Australian captain, Mark Taylor, for the position of the CEO or GM of Cricket Australia. He is of the firm belief that the next one year would be a testing period for Australian cricket and if the correct decisions are not taken and the board doesn't move in the right direction, it could degenerate the game and actually take Australian cricket back by 30 years.
He emphasized the need to select players not only on their stats and averages but also on temperament and their ability to make runs and take wickets under difficult circumstances and in tough situations. He has also encouraged the players to unite and refuse to accept Cricket Australia's rotation policy, stating that they should insist on playing every game instead of being rested in between. He further added that there should be just one team for all the 3 formats of the game as constant changing and cropping creates insecurity and uncertainty amongst players which tends to force them to play for themselves rather than for the team.
Warne has demanded that only former cricketers should run the administration of the sport in the country which would be a deviation form the current set-up which comprises of a number of officials from other sport. He called for a complete revamp of the national selection panel, barring the former wicketkeeper, Rodney Marsh, who Warne has proposed to be the Chairman of Selectors. According to Warne, Marsh should be joined by Mark Waugh, Damien Martyn and Glenn McGrath who would be the other selectors.
Warne has also backed Darren Lehmann as the assistant coach, Michael Hussey or Michael Bevan as the batting coach and Merv Hughes or Bruce Reid as the bowling coach. He has also recommended the name of Ian Chappell for the role of a consultant, adding that Chappell had the greatest influence on his own career and his understanding of the sport is second to none
